The GenAsia Challenge is an annual competition designed for high school and university students across Asia to challenge their information verification skills. Participants, grouped into teams, will undergo a series of challenges focused on identifying misinformation and uncovering the truth in the age of generative AI. Our objective is to foster a generation equipped to combat false information, turning this into an annual contest that rigorously tests and enhances their ability to discern and debunk misinformation.

This year, now in its fifth edition, the challenge will take place in Japan, Taiwan, India, Mongolia, and Thailand.

In an era where AI and the internet can create convincing fake content that spreads in seconds, the ability to identify accurate information isn't just useful—it's essential for navigating modern life.

The GenAsia Challenge is a three-stage competition that challenges young people to demonstrate how quickly and accurately they can research and verify information online.

Teams work together on missions designed to identify misinformation and establish the truth.

The World Championship finals bring together the top 3 teams from each of six countries—Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, Mongolia, and India—to compete for the global title.

Prize

Teams that advance through nationals and place in the World Championship will compete for over $1,800 in total prizes!

Schedule:

The 2025 Youth Verification Challenge will be held in three stages on the following dates. All events will be held online:

  • Kick-off Event: November 22, 2025 (Saturday) 2:00-4:00 PM
  • National Tournament: November 29, 2025 (Saturday) 2:00-4:00 PM
  • World Tournament: December 13, 2025 (Saturday) - Time TBA

Eligibility:

  • Participants must be Japanese speakers between the ages of 12 and 24. Teams of 2-3 members must be formed at registration (birth dates must be between April 1, 2001 and October 1, 2013).
  • Participants must provide a valid Google account (Gmail or Google Workspace) at registration. This account will be used to access challenges and receive competition-related information. Please ensure your email address is entered correctly.

Format:

  • Kick-off Event: A 2-hour online event where participants will tackle the online mystery game "Ray's Blog." This will be followed by a lecture from Daisuke Furuta, Editor-in-Chief of Japan Fact-Check Center, who will share essential strategies for winning the international competition.
  • National Tournament: Teams compete online in real-time against multiple verification challenges. Use your fact-checking knowledge to decode misinformation on the internet.
  • World Tournament: Compete online against winning teams from each participating country. Work as a team to identify truth from fiction faster and more accurately than anyone else.

Language:

The National Tournament will be conducted in Japanese, and Japanese interpretation will be provided throughout the World Tournament.

Additional Terms:

  • Organizers reserve the right to request identification to verify participant eligibility.
  • This event will be recorded and filmed. Footage will be used by organizers solely for future educational promotion and documentation purposes.
  • Participants agree to respect the privacy of other participants and protect the personal data of all participants during the competition.
  • Bullying, discrimination, intimidation, hate speech, and other exclusionary behavior are strictly prohibited. Cheating, fraud, impersonation, and exploitation of system vulnerabilities are also prohibited. These actions are grounds for disqualification.
  • Participants agree to compete fairly and comply with all rules. Organizers reserve the right to disqualify participants who violate the rules.

The program teaches the three essential steps for combating misinformation through hands-on experience: "Doubt," "Research," and "Judge." With curriculum accessible to everyone—from programming and information literacy enthusiasts to those less familiar with digital devices—the program has earned high praise from educators and has been featured in major media outlets including NHK and Asahi Shimbun.
Japan Fact-check Center
A non-profit organization established by the Safer Internet Association in October 2022 to combat online misinformation and disinformation. To prevent social disruption caused by unverified information spreading on social media, experts and fact-checkers conduct verification and publish their findings and processes on their website. The organization provides comprehensive countermeasures including fact-check article publication, media literacy education, and research on mis/disinformation. Adopting internationally recognized guidelines and a five-level rating system, they ensure transparent information delivery. Prioritizing independence and neutrality, they aim to build a healthy information environment while respecting individuals' freedom of expression.
